Issue
After upgrading Dell Optiplex 780 PC (Intel Core2 Duo E7500 with Intel Q45/Q43 graphics chipset) to Windows 10 it's no longer possible to set the monitor to its native 1920 x 1080 resolution. Maximum allowed resolution is listed as 1600 x 1200.
Resolution
First of all, I tried to find a suitable Intel Graphics Media Accelerator driver for this chipset that would work in Windows 10. The chipset is too old for any official Windows 10 support, but after some experimenting, I found that a Windows 7 / Vista version (Win7Vista_64_151719) that successfully upgraded the native Windows 10 graphics driver (I also saved a copy here in case Intel pulls it from it' website). This was actually not even the latest version of this driver available from Intel, but the latest one wouldn't install at all.
This driver didn't resolve the actual issue, but luckily it supports custom resolutions which allowed for the following workaround:
- Right click on the Desktop > Graphics Properties
- Display > Custom Resolutions add a new 1920x1080, 32bit, 60Hz resolution.
- Now go to Windows Settings > System > Display, click on Advanced Display Settings and then Display Adaptor Properties for Display1
- In the Display Adaptor Properties window click on Monitor tab, uncheck Hide modes that this monitor cannot display box, and click Apply
- Switch back to the Adapter tab and click List All Modes button.
- In here you should see the previously created custom resolution. Select 1920 x 1080 and save the changes.
